Before we examine the opinion about motorcyclists, let’s first see how people describe motorcycles: dangerous; exciting; noisy; eco-friendly; sexy; intimidating; economical; a money pit; irresistible; for those with a death wish; seductive; repulsive; reliable transportation; a mass of chrome with oil leaks; your best friend; something that annoys neighbors; an expression of your freedom as a citizen; the perfect vehicle; a Japanese threat to Western economies; an ideal blend of technology and aesthetics; a test for the limits of human driving skills; a toy for boys; war machines; a means of travel that promotes human harmony; transport good only for the ignorant; something to buy and modify to your own; something associated with men, where wives are not allowed;
Quite conflicting, right? Similarly, the opinion of society about motorcyclists is NOT unambiguous. Some people consider them dangerous and criminal because of how the media has portrayed them. At the same time, others see motorcyclists as adventurers, freedom-loving individuals who simply enjoy riding on two wheels and experiencing adventures.
Ultimately, the opinion about motorcyclists is individual and depends on many factors: personal views and experiences; cultural and social influences; media coverage.
Opinion of Motorcyclists in the Past
In the past, motorcyclists were often depicted as deviants in society, involved in crime, drugs, and violence. This opinion was formed after an incident in California. In 1947, the “Motorcycle Rally of American Motorcyclists” was held in the town of Hollister, California. Many motorcyclists attended this event. During the event, members of the biker organization “Outlaws” caused violence, chaos, and destruction. Popular media covered this, creating an extremely negative image of motorcyclists.
Additionally, the “Hell’s Angels” contributed to the negative reputation of motorcyclists. They were associated with criminal activities and breaking the law. In the 1960s, using media attention and advertising, they strengthened their image of being “brutal” and “unapproachable.”
Opinion of Motorcyclists Today
Nowadays, they are viewed as people who have a passion for riding motorcycles and share this passion with others. Of course, there are still people who have prejudices about motorcyclists, especially if they are dressed in leather and have tattoos. However, the overall perception of motorcyclists has changed.
The idea that motorcyclists are “outlaws” is more of a myth than a fact.
